Orchid Success Outdoors (in our climate)

with Rob Porter

Want to grow orchids outdoors in southern Victoria? There are literally hundreds of species and cultivars that will thrive in our climate. You don’t need a hot climate, a hothouse, or grow them indoors. Come and learn about “cold growing” orchids and the best ways to be successful with beautiful blooms. Learn some new names (Zygopetalum anyone?), basic orchid care, how to help preserve native species, and take home an orchid you have potted up yourself in our hands-on activity.  Feel free to bring an orchid you have a question about. Our presenter is Rob Porter from the Warrnambool and District Orchid Society, our local orchid club which has monthly meetings and has members at all stages in their orchid journey.

This workshop would be about an hour of information then 30-60 minutes of hands-on activity and while designed for adults, children are welcome if they have a carer to work with them 1:1.

We are working with potting media. Gardening gloves with lots of feel, dust masks especially if you have impaired lung function, and secateurs or florists’ snips or scissors. Plants, potting media and pots will be provided.

Preserving Food – a modern take on an ancient process

with Rob Porter

Cultures around the world developed ways to preserve food before modern canning and refrigeration. The resulting flavours became embedded in cultures and carried into modern cuisines. Many techniques also still allow us to store food in energy efficient ways. This workshop will start with a discussion of the main preserving techniques including drying, salting, smoking, fermenting, pickling, canning or bottling, freezing, and more. It will end with a hands-on activity where we make a pickled product to take home.

The workshop is designed for adults, but children are welcome if they have a carer to work with them 1:1 and they are tall enough to work at a normal bench height without standing on a chair or stool.

Participants please note that you will be working with beetroot, so dress accordingly (gloves and aprons will be provided).
